I chose the Habitat forHumanity build because I wantedto get involved in the South Habitatfor Humanity Club, but never hadthe time to go to the builds, Fishersaid. Global Youth Service Dayallowed students like Fisher easyaccess to several volunteeractivities, in the hope that theywould discover new ways to getinvolved in the community andcontinue to participate in volunteerorganizations.Students found satisfaction intheir service. I volunteeredbecause giving up a small piece ofmy day a few times a year isimportant to me, said seniorAustin DeSpirito, who served as agroup leader. Any kind of help Ican offer to people is fulfilling.DeSpirito was tasked withleading a handful of other studentsat the Wonderlab garden. As ateam, we tilled, laid manure, laidtop soil, mulched, pulled weeds, and cleaned the garden, saidDeSpirito. It may have not been themost glamorous activity on theService Day itinerary, but thestudents knew how much their hardwork would benefit their city.DeSpirito walked away from theday knowing that he and the othervolunteers had helped those whoneeded it.- KYLE CARPENTER |
