The ceremony was held in the IUauditorium on March 1 6. 3 The auditorium is filled with both high schooland middle school competitors from across the state of Indiana. 4. JuniorAmanda Lin reviews her material minutes before she competes. Lin and herteammates spent the entire year preparing and studying in hopes ofadvancing to state and nationals. 5. In 2013, theteam did not return to nationals.They did, however, take animportant lesson away from theirexperience: how to learn from theirmistakes and fun. While thisScience Olympiad season was notone for for winning big at the majorleagues, 2013 was a year ofgrowth for the team.Going into state on March16, senior Michelle Nguyen saidthat she was optimistic, thinking thattheir team might be able to pullthis off. Unfortunately, thisoptimism would not last long. Theteams worked their hardest, withthe test-takers answering questionsvigorously and the mechanicstrying to make all of their hoursbuilding during spring breakworthwhile. All day, they waited inanticipation for the news.When the results came back,the team was placed at 3rdoriginally, but an error pushed theteam back to 4th place. SouthsScience Olympiad received adisheartening realization: theywould not be making it to nationals.Oh yeah we were disappointed. Itwas the first time we hadntreached Nationals. We were usedto working to May [whenNationals is], said Nguyen of thenews.The letdown was eased whenthe whole team went out for icecream, said junior Jenny Lin.Each year of ScienceOlympiad brought its own uniqueups and downs. Yes, thedisappointment at State stung, butScience Olympiad membersophomore Nathanael Carlsonwas only a little bit disappointed.After all, we tried our best.
