The debate over gay rights andmarriage equality was everywherein 2013: in conversations, ontelevision and in the papers.Bloomington was no exception.From January 31 to February3, this issue took the forefront as theBuskirk-Chumley theater filled withgay rights supporters during fourdays of live performance, lectureand films related to LGBT (lesbian,gay, bisexual and transgender)issues for the 2013 PRIDE FilmFestival. The theater showed 12different movies anddocumentaries, both foreign andlocal, that encouraged awarenessand acceptance of the LGBTcommunity.Bloomington South PRIDEclub president, senior SarahMenefee, and other club memberswere some of those in attendanceon February 2 for the screening oftwo feature films, White Frog andFour More Years, and a short filmtitled Saturday Shorts. The shortwas a favorite amongst clubmembers because of the variety ofstories that it portrayed. In additionto the films, there was a danceparty that followed that allowedattendees to unwind from thenights heavy subject matter. SouthPRIDE was pleased with the partyaspect, Menefee said. It was funjust getting to hang out afterspending such an emotional timetogether.The film festival extendedbeyond the medium of video toadvocate gay rights. Kicking off thefirst night of films on Jan. 31, thefestival organized flash mobweddings to protest recentdeliberation by Indianaslegislature, which was consideringa constitutional amendmentbanning gay marriage in the state.Mayor Mark Kruzanperformed more than a dozensymbolic weddings for gay andlesbian couples to voice support forthe gay rights movement. Thecommunity was encouraged toattend the weddings. It was anincredible experience to witness anentire stage full of proud gaycouples celebrating their love asequal, said junior Eva Marsh.PROUD members andadvocates for the LGBT communityat South were ecstatic after theevent.
