Over the past fouryears Aryea and Weigle havetraveled to Kentucky, WestVirgina (twice), and Nicaragua inthe name of charity. These tripswere organized by their church-First Presbyterian.Although each mission tripwas enjoyable, the last trip toPosoltega Nicaragua left thelargest mark on the girls. It wasa major culture shock, it was sodifferent from my own world,Weigle said. Aryea and Weigledeparted for Nicaragua in July of2009 and were immediatelyshocked by the economicdespair. According to Weigle, thecondition of the country was bad, with half of its citizens livingunder the poverty line.Over the span of two weeks, the girls painted houses, visitedlow- income schools, worked forthe hot lunch program, andcleaned up the streets. When notvolunteering, Aryea and Weiglerelaxed at a Nigaraguan familyshome. They befriended theteenage daughter in the familyand kept in contact with her.Along with a new friendship,Aryea and Weigle gained addedinsight into the world. I learnednot to take things for granted, itsimportant for people to see howothers live, Weigle said. Thanksto this trip, she decided to majorin international studies of thedeveloping world. It showed methat I have so much more than Ineed, said Aryea. With nothingbut positive things to say about it,Aryea and Weigle recommendedthis trip to all teenagers.- ELLIE FUQUAHmu
