sufprtute siblingsWhen siblings competed in the same track and field events, these duos helpedmotivate each other rather than cause rivalries.Being the youngest child, theexpectation was set high, Being inconstant fear of living up to yourolder sibling is a common problemfor many people, but for juniorBasharaa Harris and sophomoreMichaela Hull, it is not a problem.Basharaa and Michaela bothhave older brothers on the trackand field team, and they bothdecided to follow in their oldersiblings footsteps and join theteam, and even the same events,Looking back, I would have neverthought I would have been athrower, said Michaela, Ivealways been a gymnast and intocheer, and if it wasnt for mybrother doing shot, I dont think Iwould have gotten into it.While some older siblingstend to think of younger siblings asa drag, senior Idris Harris andjunior Gabe Hull disagree. I likebeing on the same team and in thesame events as my sister, saidIdris. If she ever needs help withsomething or has a question, I canhelp her out. While Idris may enjoy runningthe same events as his sister,Basharaa feels a little differentabout the whole idea. Its kind ofintimidating being in the sameevents as my brother because hesso good, said Barsharaa. But itdefinitely gives me something towork for.Idris and Basharaa run two ofthe same events, the long jump andthe four-by-one. Even though theirpersonal records arent quite thesame, they are still competitivewith one another. Weve alwaysbeen competitive, Basharaa said.Ever since we were little, Idrisadds. On the other hand, Gabe andMichaela Hull, who both participatein throwing shot and discus, arentas competitive against one another,There is a difference in theperformance level between us,said Gabe. So you cant reallycompare. While you may not beable to compare these siblingsperformance levels, Michaelapersonally feels that her brother isbetter. Gabe has more motivationfor the sport than I do, shelaughed. And he gets more out ofit.Despite whether or not thesesiblings are competitive againstone another, they always motivatedeach other to reach their fullpotential. In meets everyonestands in a circle around the trackand cheers us on, said Idris, Andmy sister sometimes gives me littlemotivational speeches like you cando it.Not only did these siblingsmotivate each other at school, butin life in general. When we are insummer programs, and we dontknow many people, its good tohave that family support, saidMichaela. As the year continued and theseason drew to an end, all four ofthese athletes planned to workhard and improve for the nextseason, whether it would be backat South or somewhere new. Theyall plan on working really hard andpracticing in the off-season toprepare for next year. While theolder siblings plan to continue onsetting the standards, the youngersiblings will continue to follow intheir footsteps and live up to them.It takes a lot of discipline, saidBasharaa. I just really need to stayfocused.-KAYLA HART |
