strength in defeatWhile the boys soccer teams season might not have ended as they wouldhave hoped, their season was still a success and a sign of good things tocome.Overall, the Bloomington Southboys soccer team did a great jobin the 2009 season, The team wasled by captains junior Alex Forneyand senior Christopher Dunigan.Forney said that the team did agood job, and that they had highexpectations for the season. Itwas my goal to be the organizedone and get everyone focused toreach the ultimate goal [winningconference], said Forney. However, Souths high expectationswere let down during sectionalswhen they lost to BloomingtonNorth. Senior Brett Myers said,We had a lot of confidencewalking onto the field, we thoughtwe would win easily since we hadbeaten North earlier in theseason. Unexpectedly, the gamewas much closer than the regularseason match-up had been, andfans witnessed a contest that wascharacterized by close scoringopportunities from both sides. Thegame was tied at the final whistle, and was to be decided by penaltykicks. Unfortunately, the Pantherslost their composure, giving Norththe sectional title andadvancement to regionals. It wasan awful feeling to lose a gamelike that, we ended our seasonlosing to North, it was definitely alet down, said Forney. Not only did the boys losethe game, they were alsodisappointed by multiple injuriesthat occurred earlier in the season.Senior Charles McClary tore hisACL during the summer, and wasunable to play at all during theseason, McClary was one of Southsstrongest team players and, wheninjured, passed on theresponsibility of varsity goalkeeperto junior Cory Underwood. As aresult of McClarys injury, as wellas others, the healthy players reallyhad to pull it together and fight fortheir season,Yes, the team ended on a badnote with a loss to North, but theiroverall season was one of the bestin recent memory.- ANDREW SILLSLeft: Seniors Zackary Moon, BrettMyers, juniors Cory Underwood andAlex Forney, and senior ChristopherDunigan line up to be introducedbefore their game.
