Description: Bloomington Souths cross countrycamp happened every year in theweek ofMcCormicks Creek State Park. Itwas a time for the team to workhard with two-a-day practices, butit was also a time for fun and teambonding.Camp was not all just fun andgames though, as coach LarryWilliams had a tough workoutschedule prepared for his team.We had two runs, one in themorning and one before dinner, said sophomore Michael Staton.Usually the morning run would bea relaxed run of somewherebetween 30 and 60 minutes. Theafternoon run was typically aworkout of some sort. It mighthave been a tempo run; it couldhave been a fartlek run, orsometimes the famous Wolf CaveHill workout, which was, basicallysprinting up a massive hill someCUllllt7UllU.IlThe boys cross country teamcamped to train and bond.10 to 16 times, said sophomoreMackenzie Conrad,The other side of cross countrycamp for these running crazedmen was all the free time they hadin between runs. In his spare timeat camp, Junior Jordan Gornallenjoyed going to play ultimatefrisbee, or just hanging aroundcamp, playing corn hole anddoing whatever. They had even taken to a newtradition of playing ultimatefrisbee against other high schoolteams that were camping at thepark too. These were not quite all of thereasons why these runners hadtheir camp every year. It was alsoto build team chemistry, and toget to know who you would berunning with for the next year,I definitely think that the groupbecomes closer when we spendso much time toqether. You get toknow the new members and kindof welcome them on board whilealso spending time with formerteammates, said Conrad,After each of these exciting, tiring, work and fun loaded days, the team could wind down withthe beloved team dinners, whereall of the parents would bring insome food for the runners.Once the dinner was finishedand the parents had packed upand left, the team prepared for agood nights sleep with the teammeeting, followed by just hangingout around the camp with theteammates. Finally, when theserunning machines went to bed ontheir cots and air mattresses, theycould look forward to anotherexciting day at cross countryJunior Robert Henderson focuses on the pace of his run.PHOTO BY ELISABETH FRANKSSophomore Eduardo Vidaurri-Rodriguez and seniorDaniel Huggins round the corner as sophomoreMackenzie Conrad follows.
