Onesuch innovation was the laptop; aportable computer small enoughto sit on its owners lap. During the2009-2010 school year atBloomington South, the laptopinfiltrated the classroom and wasused in several English classes,including World Studies andW131. Students in these classesliked the idea of being able to uselaptops in school. Sophomore ErinMcNeil said, It [using laptops]makes things more efficient.Theyre pretty cool.Sophomore Stewart Rickert said,We use them [laptops] forprojects. It gives us a differentangle on work.However, not all studentspreferred using laptops inclasses. For some, books stillwere the tried and true method oflearning. Junior Shelby Babcocksaid, [I would rather read] a book.Computers are a good resource,but books are good forinformation and theyre portable.They are good to escape in.The laptops were receivedthrough a grant written by Ms.Mary Beth Hannah-Hansen andMr. Ted Baechtold, the father ofsophomore Caleb Baechtold. Thelaptops were used for projects,research and web-based research.Books were valuable toBabcock, though she enjoyed theuse of computers as well.However, when given the choiceof saving her books in a fire, orher computer, she said she wouldsave her books.
