blessedbut not burdeThe Hill family shares its blessings for the service of the church. In Nathaniel Usher Hill IVs possession was a three-inch binder stuffed fullof photocopied newspaper and bookarticles, all concerning the first threeNat Hills and their extensive accomplishments. Since Nat Hill I moved toBloomington in 1879, each Hill madehis own mark on the area, two of themeven being inducted into the MonroeCounty Hall of Fame. But despite theirforefathers outstanding success, NatHill IV and Nat Hill V found a wayto serve the community that may completely exceed the work of their ancestors.Though Hill IV and Hill V hadjust as much success in the professional world as their forefathers, theyused their personal time to impact thecommunity. Hill IV said, I did all thethings youre supposed to do - workedhard, made money. But those thingswere not nearly as fulfilling as what Iam doing now. In his retirement fromteaching veterinary science at the Indiana University Medical Center, Hilltook up a life of service. He and hisson became instrumental in the ClearCreek Christian Church ministry thathelped get kids to church. On any given Sunday, Wednesday, or any other day that might include church activities, the Hills werefound driving their 15-passenger vanaround Bloomington, picking up kidsthat would not have a ride otherwise. On Wednesdays, they brought themback to Hill Vs home, where they hadBible study. They sacrificed their timeall in the hope that they might have aninfluence on the lives of the kids theymet by introducing them to Christianity. Hill TV said, Time will tell if weare getting anything done, but I thinkwe are. One of the kids they workedwith, junior Marquese Steward, affirmed that they made a difference inhis life. I was a pretty bad person untilI got involved with them. The Hills doubted that these workswould earn them a spot in the Hall ofFame wall next to their fathers, but thatdid not bother them. We are hopingto get into a different hall of fame- onethat isnt recognized here, said Hill IV.Hill V said that he did not feel pressure to live up to the legacy of hisfathers. Im really grateful that Ivebeen blessed with ancestors that haveput me in such a great position, but Idont feel burdened by it. Blessed, butnot burdened. -CAITLIN ADAMSThey got me goingto church and everything.—junior MarqueseStewardThey pick me upfor church everySunday. They loveme like I was a partof their family.
