/ /¥ mmhers in the spotlightDavid Shuster: A True Panther At HeartBloomington South graduate DavidShuster worked as the anchor for MSNBCs 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, ashow covering the White House and analyzing the Presidents actions. In spiteof his prestigious position on MSNBCalong with a life in Washington, Shuster still felt like he was a true Hoosier.Even though Im on TV, I am verymuch like the people in Bloomington.I love Bloomington basketball, the Musical Arts Center, IUs campus, and ofcourse Bloomington South, he said.David Shuster graduated from Southin 1985. While at the school, he participated in concert and marching band, swimming, tennis, and fostered a lifelong interest in politics.Shuster attended the University ofMichigan where he had a radio showthat dealt with campus and nationalnews. He loved it and decided to takesome classes in broadcast journalism. He had always been a good speaker, even in high school. I wasnt ever avery good writer, but I had the abilityto articulate and talk in class really easily, Shuster said.Shuster loved journalism, diving intoit immediately by taking an internshipwith CNN which led to a full-time jobwith the network. After four years,Shuster left CNN and worked withFox news for the next six years. ThenMSNBC hired him, and hes workedthere ever since. On a typical day at MSNBC Shuster read wire stories, called peopleto confirm facts and wrote scripts forthe broadcast. However it was covering breaking news that really excitedShuster.Breaking news is the most fun news,he said. Its not scripted. Basically Iwing it. Youre always on your feet; listening to the producers in your ears, spouting out whats said to you as fastas it comes. Its a thrilling challenge. And Shuster never feared challenges.Although he felt challenges were animportant learning opportunity, he advised that high school shouldnt just beabout challenges. High school is forenjoying oneself. Students should havefun. Life gets too serious to not havefun in high school. Its one of the onlytimes to try things and find out whoyou are and who you want to be. Thememories of high school never leaveyou. Even after 23 years since mygraduation, I still love thinking backto South. I guess Im just a Panther atheart. -CHANDLER WAGGONERWhat will you be famous for?1>usinessmanjunior WilliamStuartMartial arts Show camesophomore Cody sophomore JustinGearhartDeckardSoccerunior GregoryJohnsonAuthorjunior MinjinChoiBasketballsenior NicholasCarlsbergWriter Military officersenior Eva junior DylanBlacconiere CosseySBi ANNIVERSARYOn a trip back to Bloomington David Shusterstopped by South to talk with Chandler Waggoner.
