Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 2009, Page 205

Description: backtothefutureThough 2009 was a reflection of many eras, the 1960s and 1970s made the greatest impression on more than just style.President Jimmy Carter said, We mustadjust to changing times and still holdto unchanging principles. His wordsrang true in a generation that seemed,at first glance, so vastly different fromour own. An energy crisis and steadilydepleting environment posed a threatto what had become a fast-paced andtechnologically dependent society. When trees were gradually replacedwith skyscrapers, it became importantto focus on concepts borrowed fromanother era. Principles from anotherera could perhaps help deal with todays challenges. The era to look to for advice was the60s in which peace, love, and musicwere main concerns of many Americans. During that time America wasready for a radical change, and pressedto receive it.It seemed that between the intense2008 presidential election and a direneed for energy conservation, a little ofthat decade had reappeared at Bloomington South. It was evident even infashion that the 60s had made a comeback; moccasins, bold patterns, andeven the occasional sighting of bellbot-toms proved that what goes around, comes around. However, maybe someof the trends never left to begin with.Students at South still bobbed theirheads to musicians and musical movements that made an impression on theworld long before they were born, including The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.A lot of old songs we can relate totoday, said freshman Casey Merriman.Although the concept of recyclingand energy conservation were practiced by our great grandparents wholived through World War II, it hadsince been neglected for far too long. With evidence of global warming effects like fatal heat waves in the summer and 60 degree days in December,South students began to take action. It helps to recycle, and conserve gasby going the speed limit instead of fiveover, said freshman Jesse Sipes. There was something to be said forlooking to the past for advice; recyclingold ideas while recycling cans and bottles. Amongst the smog and collapsingeconomy, there remained an unspokenbond uniting two vastly different generations. By demanding change andcleaning up the environment, studentsremembered the principles that wouldalways remain most important.-ELIZA WILLIAMSWhat is one thing that will never go out of style? The afro.
