Description: Coach Kluesner brought a newattitude to the baseball field.New SeasonNew CoachA new season always brought newthings. The biggest change for the 2009Bloomington South baseball team wasa new coach. Coach Phil Kluesner replaced long-time coach Grier Wernerand brought with him a whole new attitude to the field.Sometimes changes could be challenging and tough to deal with, butaccording to junior Derek Grossthe transition between Coach Wernerand Coach Kluesner wasnt too bad.Junior Tyler Jordan agreed andsaid that Kluesner is a very goodcoach and will do whatever it takes towin.Gross and Jordan both said CoachKluesner was strict, but also agreed thathe did not dwell on mistakes. Insteadthe coach helped his players focus onwhat they could do better the nexttime.Coach Kluesner emphasized playing as a team, and did not focus onthe individual. Coach Kluesner forsure focuses on playing as a team, explained Gross, we all help one anotherimprove our game. Whether it was inpractice working on their technique, orshouting at one another during a game, the players of the South baseball teamhad each others back.He is always full of emotion, andpositive, Gross said, and that onlyhelps us improve our game and striveto do better. -MADELINE HAYFORDwhat is your greatest memory from the season?Going home from agame and blowing thetire in the woody(Coffeys car),—senior James CoffeyCenter FieldSecond BaseWe were playing Pike, I wasgoing back for a flyball andDerek Gross was going forward.I caught it and fell, while Derekslid under me and took me out.—sophomore Kevin SwangoEverything about thisseason has been great,—senior Tyler DuganLeft FieldWhen the opponentis on 2nd base, (Kevin)Swango and I talk aboutAnimal Planet...penguinscan swim 30 miles perhour underwater.—sophomore JosephForney IIWhen (James) Coffeyran into the fence.,,anddied.—junior Tyler JordanRight FieldShort Stop4ftThird BaseCatcherADerek GrosssTranslucent Childon the bus,—sophomore JohnRobertsonPitcherAt the North game,(James Coffey) didntknow I was on secondand he tried stealing,We both were on second just looking at eachother.—junior Derek GrossWe were playing Seymour and I got hit in thehead by a pitch, it brokemy helmet and gaveme a concussion.—sophomore MatthewActonI was pitching againstColumbus East andJohn Robertson triedto catch the ball hit toright field, it tipped offhis glove and (James)Coffey caught it.—sophomore JohnWaldon74 | SPORTS | boysbaseball
