As our civilization hasevolved, so have our methods of cheating. Today technology makes cheatingsurprisingly easy.Junior John Powers, who explicitly denied any involvement, told ofa student who sent a test key via textmessage the morning before the test.Sophomore Samuel Oyler saidthat he had heard of people cheatingwith cell phones. And junior Emily Schlictmandid not know of someone who had notcheated. I believe that for smallerschool assignments its not a big deal,Schlictman explained, But when itcomes to bigger things like the SATand final exams, cheating is not acceptable.South chemistry teacher, Mr. NeilRapp, agreed, I dont know of anyreason why cheating would be acceptable, its supposed to be the studentsresponsibility to prepare for college, ajob, and life. I know it sounds cliche, but youre only cheating yourself fromlearning.Cheating challenged many studentsmoral values. Oyler described cheating as very, very, very bad. But, whenasked if he would ever consider cheating, he admitted yes, if you could getaway with it.Other students had different reasoning. Powers believed that cheating ismostly about respect, or lack thereof, for yourself and for your teachers.Powers decided that cheating would beacceptable only if the teacher gives youthe department test, but they haventtaught you what is on the test.Sophomore Henry Malone denied cheating. However he admittedthat cheating on an easy homework assignment is okay... but not really. Ithink cheating is an easy way to get outof studying but it doesnt help you outin the long run. he explained, In general cheating isnt a good idea.Powers agreed and said that cheatingdoesnt benefit you, only your grade.-LINDSEY ELLINGTONETHICSunveiledFrom Report Card onthe Ethics of AmericanYouth, from theJosephson Institute, asreported in the March2009 issue ofThe Atlantic.2/3of U.S. studentshave cheated ontests1/3of U.S. studentsadmitted to usinginternet assistedplagiarism82%of U.S. studentshave copiedanother studentswork26%of respondentssaid they had liedon at least one ofthe surveys questions93%of U.S. studentssaid that they hadgood ethicscheating | ACADEMICS | 27 |
