For freshmen, the first dayof school was the realization that they would once again haveto work their way up to the coveted rank of upperclassmen. The faces of all the older students were enough to make onefeel intimidated, said freshman Leah Hayes. The first few days some upperclassmen threw a heavylaundry bag at me and laughed, said freshman Amy Clark.Although Clark concedes the boys who did it were beingstupid, and that most such attacks are in good fun.The stairwells were a cacophony of new sights andsounds: people talking on cell phones, people jamming toiPods, and occasionally, the rite of passage that was hasslingfreshmen. When freshmen walked into their new classrooms, they saw many new faces. I liked walking into a class andseeing people I didnt know. It encouraged me to make friendsthat way, Hayes said.High school had many new aspects to get used to.The people in high school are a lot more mature than inmiddle school, said freshman Daniel Young. It is fun to bearound people that are older ~ like my brother - who I can seeat school everyday. Because high school students are moremature than middle-schoolers, teachers provided studentsmore freedom in ninth grade. Some freshmen thought highschool required less homework. Those who came from small, private middle schools, like Saint Charles, had only one problem adjusting to highschool - what to wear. I like South a lot better than SaintCharles because I dont have to wear a uniform, said freshmanAnthony Sarpa.By the end of ninth grade many freshmen were notonly used to the environment, but were left wondering whatall the fuss had been about. I made the transition out to bea lot bigger than it really was, freshman Nate Stanger said.Like many of his fellow ninth graders Stanger ended the yearlooking ahead to the next phase of high school - sophomoreyear and the opportunity to hassle next years freshmen.Freshmen one hum-nine
