4c $0Q^UBelow: Molly Pate interned at the Police Station from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday nights. The craziest thingthat has happened on a [police] run was probably seeing drunken people on the streets, said Pate andthis guy who said he was the anti-Christ and we were all gonna die by fire. Pate got paired with a differentpoliceman every week and said that her experience solidified her decision to become a police officer.Working Towards the FutureStory by Torin FranzFor many, the day dragged on; third to fourth period, and fourth to fifth, but forsome seniors, school was over after their third class, but the day was far from over. Theygathered up their gear and went off to cadet teaching or their internship. I made uproutines and acts, senior Christine Hartman said about her internship at the BloomingtonCommunity Circus. On Saturday I would teach at risk [with drugs] kids trapeze. [We]practiced a lot and did strength training. It built up stamina.Along with Hartman, other South students worked with kids during the day, butthey were part of the cadet teaching program. For some this is a chance to get to hangout with little kids and have a good time, and for others its about learning something neweveryday. [I learned] to be patient and enjoy the moment, senior Katrina McCrory saysof her experience in Ms. Finneys second grade. Thats what they do. And not to stressout so much.In general, the cadet teachers would help around the classroom. They might decorate, laminate, anything to make the teachers jobs easier as well as helping the kids. Myfavorite part was the group project. We planted some seeds, and I got to take the kids outin small groups, a reminiscent senior Jill Sentiere claimed. I loved the Halloween partyand getting to see all the kids dressed up, senior Maggie Stork said. The internships were a bit more serious, as the students were on the job with realemployers. The goal of the program was to help the seniors figure out what they want todo when they get older. Senior Karl Schiefer was an intern at BKD, an accounting firm.[The Internship] helped me realize that it takes a lot of work to achieve this, Schiefer toldof the work and dedication that he saw at the firm. Some truly enjoyed their time outside of the classroom and the freedom it gavethem, and others found the work rather difficult. All in all, it gave them lasting memoriesand new friendships. Senior Ben Chappell, a cadet teacher at Childs for Mrs. Dwyersgym class, will always remember his little guys. Chappell said excitedly, Zoe...shes mygirl!46 Academics |
