Under The SeaBy: Molly MeridithWe all came back to school and within the first six weeks, wecelebrated the homecoming of graduated students. To show ourhomecoming spirit. South had a spirit week and a dance to welcomehome the former students. Spirit week had always been very popularamong the student body. I loved spirit week, I could wear goofyoutfits, and wear my favorite cowgirl boots, said junior Kelsey Kent.Other students do not view homecoming as just a timeto dress up in crazy clothes. Some students enjoy homecomingfor the annual dance. I went to the dance with my girlfriendand busted a move, said junior James Kerr. The theme for thisyears homecoming dance was Under the Sea. Student councilmembers decorated the gym with sea shells and a colorful balloonarch. Decorating the gym was a very long, drawn out process. Weworked very hard to make the gym look beautiful, and it was verydifficult to get the balloons on the arch, said junior student councilmember, Cici Lemke. The Pike game was the highlight of Homecoming week witha score of 42-16. The annual fall pep rally was held in the purplegym. Principals bobbed for apples and students had a chance to winan iPod Shuffle. This year homecoming nominations were done in a differentway. In the past the student body nominated representatives fromtheir SRTs to be members of the court. This year students couldrun for a court with a friend. At halftime the nominees walked onthe football field where the homecoming King and Queen wereannounced. Seniors Harry Han and Jenny Blackwell won thenominations. The anticipated event is celebrated on Saturday, wherethe king and queen shared a traditional dance. We also saw a great deal of spirit shown all throughout theweek. This years homecoming ended up being very successful.Harry and I are both onStudent Council and the daythey decided on the newsystem (for running), weboth thought about runningtogether.
