Description: mmOutside of the rough-neck social andacademic world of high school, Bloomington HighSchool South students sought alternative ways to fillthe gap between the schools last bell and the fewaccessible hours of delightful slumber. Rhinos YouthCenter, located in the heart of downtown Bloomington, acted as that very medium. Loaded with after-school activities and weekend revelries, Rhinos wasthe destination for many who hunted small venuesand alternative bands.Rhinos was a haven for many high schoolstudent-oriented events. Battle of the Bands 2007, afestival of high school bands from all over Bloomington turning in their pencils and pens for guitars anddrums and clashing string-to-string, note-to-note,attracted many excited peers from all aspects of thesocial spectrum. Multiple aspiring South studentsengaged in the competition, including members ofthe bands, The Taxidermists, who won third place inthe competition, and the speed metal band, Siddius,who won first. It made us feel like hot stuff aroundthe high school music scene, said junior Alex Welp,bassist for Siddius. We knew everyone was goingto be there and it gave us a chance to show off ourstuff.The Antagonist, a student created magazinepublished and distributed by Rhinos, gave some students opportunities to show off their journalistic andphotographic skills after school. Everyone is a partof it all the way through—everyone has to help out,said freshman Michael Ibsen, an active Antagoniststaff member, about the magazines monthly creationprocess.The venue also offers Youth Radio, a uniqueprogram based around youth exposure to widespreadmedia. It is place where youth can express themselves through radio and play the music they want,said freshman Adam Torneo, and you get to meetinteresting people with interesting points of views.Only a permission slip and a little seniority stoodbetween lucky students and their own radio shows.Rhinos, although a separated organizationfrom South, served as a big part in the youth community and in the lives of many South students.era man, Rob Jenkinson filming Battle ofthe Bands at Rhinos.
