oosiersutrunancerPhotos By: Alex EstabrookStory By: Monica Hammons and Cate McGillivrayThe battle with cancer is a frightening one; onethat you have probably seen someone face. Howrever, youmight be surprised to know that there are students atSouth who have already taken on cancer--and beat it. Atage three, senior Jennifer Winston was diagnosed with leukemia. She was sent to Riley Hospital where she underwent chemotherapy and other treatments, such as painfulspinal taps. Winston said, They [the doctors] caught itearly, and I was diagnosed into complete remission twoyears later.Winston said she fullv supported events suchas Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, because, Its great from apatients point of view to see the communitys support. The money we raise really helps, and its so awesome tosee the community unified towards a single cause! This vear, South students and the rest of theBloomington community stepped up, or rather ran out,to support research, awareness and cancer patients in theeighth annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer.Hoosiers Outrun Cancer was a five kilometerwalk/run. The goal was to raise over $ 130,000 for theOlcott Center for Cancer Education. This year the turnout was about 20,000 participants, 350 of which wereSouth students and faculty. The football, girls swimmingand boys tennis teams all came out to support the event.Junior Brittanv Shaffer said, Our community is very goodabout supporting each other and coming together for agreat cause!Assistant principal Joe Doyle said, Events likethis are great at raising awareness... I think they are alsoa great way to reflect on the people who have either wonor lost their battle with cancer. This was evident in Southstudents involvement in Hoosiers Outrun Cancer andRiley Childrens Dance Marathon. For many runners, the inspiration and drive torace came from the courage and strength they drew fromcancer survivors. Shaffer commented, If [cancer survivors] were strong enough to tackle cancer then I should bestrong enough to run a few miles.Bloomington was lucky to have a school withsuch big student participation in events like HoosiersOutrun Cancer. It becomes clear that we have a prettyamazing student body, said Doyle.INlIMOctober 7,2006Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Q^fQftyrm* Community |
