The welcoming community of Bloomington, Indiana encouraged all to participate in the programsand events it offered. Bloomington High School South students did not hold back this year, and many studentsparticipated in activities around the city. One huge draw for students was the charity event Hoosiers OutrunCancer.Despite the cold weather, a surprisingly large number of sports teams and South students ran orwalked in this event. With all the proceeds going towards cancer research, this was a special opportunity forstudents to give to a good cause in a healthy and fun way. Sophomore Casey Peck said he decided to be involved, for the people that have cancer. [I wanted] to support them.The crowd pumped up the runners andthere was a celebration at the finish line. Peck said his favorite part of the race was at the end when we got torun through the big helmet and eat the food.Whether it was for the celebration or the cause, this year 340South students participated in this run/walk, the largest number in Souths history.The Lotus Festival presented another year of diverse music and entertainment. Several South students volunteered during the festivities, and many enjoyed experiencing the world music. Freshman AliceSmith attended the Festival and said, I really loved seeing all of the music from different cultures.The Lotus Festival showcased different cultures and ethnic contributions to Bloomington. It gives usa taste of other cultures. Its a great experience for everyone, Smith said.In addition to art from all over the world, Bloomington also got a taste of some local artists. The JohnWaldron Arts Center brought plays and other productions for our enjoyment. More than that, the Art Centerprovided students with a chance to take art classes outside of school and display work throughout the year.Bloomington students were encouraged to participate in Youth Art Month in March, in which John WaldronArts Center proudly displayed South students photography and other art projects.The community of Bloomington enriches South in both diversity and cultural knowledge. We allgrow from the culture that is brought to us by numerous events in this interesting college town.
