Description: c/heatre SouthBreak a legStory by Courtney CrowlDrownings, shootings, and magic: believe it or not, all of these events occurred atSouth this school year.. .in the theater department. This year,Theatre South worked hard toput on three shows: Rumors, Charlottes Web and The Diviners.I liked The Diviners because the cast and crew got along so well, said junior Kaitlin Richmond. Richmond, who performed in Charlottes Web and The Diviners this year, said she liked working and practicing with others before performances, which was frequentfor Theatre South members. When were practicing for a play, we practice anywhere fromone day a week to six days a week as we get closer to performing. Its time consuming, butits rewarding, she said.Memorizing lines, however, wasnt the only things the actors had to worry about. The hardest part is getting the character down, said junior Arnitra Morgan, who also tookpart in Charlottes Web and The Diviners.Freshman Corina Simonelli figured out a method to becoming her character.I practiced lines with my dad, and used different voices to help me find the voice that Iwanted, she said.Although it may have seemed like the actors were the people doing all the work, many dont realize just how important the people behind the curtains, who help to makethe work a success, really were. Those people included the costume designers, spotlighttechnicians, stage managers, grips, sound and light board technicians, set designers andbuilders, instrumentalists, and many other jobs. Even if you dont know how to do thesethings, you can learn how to or find another job because theres always something to helpwith, said Richmond. No matter what job they took on, members of Theatre South agreed that they hadtaken away life lessons from their involvement in theater. [I learned that] patience, hardwork, and devotion are key factors not only on stage, but in real life, said Morgan. Ivealways loved acting and Ive dreamed of being famous. Theatre South was like a big opportunity to be involved in plays and acting. It ended up being the best experience of my life.Above: Ms. Catherine Rademacher gives atour of Charmichael Hall to the theater class. The theater class was not exclusive to TheatreSouth members, but was open to any studentsinterested in acting or stagecraft.Above: The cast of Rumors finishes its fallshow.
