Experiencing a Whole New Worldharbor for Self-ExpressionStory By Carson DayThe 8:00 a.m. sun opened its eyes on the school.Light pierced the windows and glass doors of the B-Wing.Thatfamiliar floor, spattered with week-old photographic chemicals,dry clay, and illuminated with natural light. The first studentsarrived in their rightful classrooms, ready to exert the rightsides of their brains. While hip-hop thumped through his head,Rafael Cronin, a Bloomington High School South junior, walkedtiredly into the darkroom.The B-Wing is mostly reputable for art classes.Photography, one of Souths most popular art classes, attractedall types of people Cronin included. His curiosity and passionfor exploring dramatic angles drew him in, not only tophotography, but to drawing as well. Like many other studentswho venture through this wing, he took both drawing classesSouth offers.Aside from drawing and photography, theB-Wing has classes for ceramics, woodshop, stained glass,computer graphics, fashion and textiles, and a young, thriving,printmaking class. Students work tediously to complete theirpieces for deadlines, giving a small taste of a professional careeras an artist. Those who succeed in creating beautiful pieces arerewarded bv having their pieces displayed in the halls.But this colorful part of the school is not just aboutart. Nutrition, home economics, social studies, study hall, andspecial education classes all reside here as well.This aspect ofthe school added to the extreme diversity of students who walkthrough these halls. Ms. Staci Jennings, teacher of photography,drawing, and art historv, said of the wings contrast betweenit and the rest of the school: Once you come up the ramp,voure in a totally different environment. But the B-Wing isstill recognized by many South students as the art wing. Croninwalked out of the darkroom holding a successful print.
