h the Places Youll Go!GraduationStory by Lisa SmithGraduation. To the 427 graduating seniors at Bloomington High School South, this had beenthe big word for the last four years. The symbolic meaning of this day and idea was appealing to all whowere involved. Those sitting through the duration of it, however, tended to dread the process of theceremony. However, the people attending Souths 2007 ceremony would have categorized the two hoursas eventful and entertaining. The ceremony seemed to move along quickly, which made it seem moreinteresting, because I was able to keep my attention on it for most of the time, said senior Sharon Davis. After introductions and welcomes, speeches were given by seniors JT Lejune and MaryLynn Baldwin.I was not nervous until I got up there and the reality of it all started to sink in. But overall, I just triedto have fun! said Baldwin. Sure enough, this seemed to be an ongoing theme throughout the two hourescapade. After the speeches, Ms. Carol McGregor and Mr. Drew Frey began to read the names of thosegraduating on the afternoon of June 2, 2007. As the names began, most people settled into their seats, knowing it would take a while before the conclusion. However, almost instantly, relief was given forthose waiting. A colorful beach ball sprang out of the seat of a graduate, and began bouncing aroundthe graduates seats. Soon, numerous other balls were flying through the air and acted as continuousentertainment for everyone in the bottom level who was anxiously waiting his or her turn to walkacross the stage and receive his or her diploma as well as those in the audience, who were looking forsome relief from the solemn ceremony. Senior Mary Kate McConahay said her favorite part of theceremony was the beach balls. Now they were a good time! After all the names were read, seniors Derek Arthur and Rhajaan Edwards continued to lightenthe mood by reading a story by Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places We Will Go. Arthur and Edwards were livelyand vivacious in their delivery of the story, creating an exciting and interesting few minutes for those inthe audience. At the conclusion of the ceremony, after the class president, senior Hanna Mordoh, instructedthe senior class to change its tassels, the former seniors erupted with joy, happy to call themselvesgraduates. The best part of graduating was probably realizing that you have finally finished high schooland are moving on to the last step before being completely on your own, Davis said. Along withcheering, champagne poppers and silly string broke the usual routine of a graduation ceremony. I readthe paper the next day, and it said that Souths [graduation] in comparison with Norths.. .seemed somuch more fun. It seemed more laid back, just the way our class is, Baldwin said.Igraduation~) p*\T\VStudent Life |
