Making it to state is the ultimate reward for all the practice and time putinto any sport. Despite how hard all the South athletes work every year, making it to state is a tough goal that is rarely reached. But, for thoseteams and individuals who do have the chance to make it to the final round it is the challenge of competing with the best of the best at wholenew level of skill.Junior Paul Young came from a family of state champion wrestlers. Both his brothers had wrestled at south—and won the state title atleast once. Its a lot to live up to, Young said. I think it overall helped me, it pushed me to work harder and train more so I could be as good asthey were. Paul was one in the group of wrestlers to make it to the State competition this year. Not making it as a team was a big let down, butgoing myself and succeeding was really an awesome feeling, said Young. Young wrestled in the 160-weight class and was the only South wrestlerto win lsl place at State. For other teams its not about winning, simply getting the bid to be in the competition is enough. Sophomore Madison True swam with thestate team this year at south, We didnt expect to win or anything even close, she said, lust swimming in the pool was enough for me. That poolis where international competitions and Olympic swimmers train, said True referring to the Natatorium at IUPUI. Seeing some of the people there, the best in the state and just being at that level is an honor. Most of these girls go to schools that wed never compete with in our conference, said sophomore Jen Winston. We also go to spend the night in the hotel and hang out and bond as a small group, said Winston.Seven different teams made it to state competitions either individually or together as a team. Boys and girls cross country both got a bid,as well as boys and girls track and field, girls swimming, boys golf, and gymnastics, and wrestling. For teams like Gymnastics only one gymnastmade it to the state level, Freshman Julie Johnston. The team backed me up the whole way, said Johnston. Even though I was the only onecompeting at state all the girls kept working with me and supporting me through the whole thing. The chance that the lucky few had to compete at the state level will be an experience that they will never forget. AH the South athleteswill continue to working for the ultimate competitive experience - the state tournament.(Far Left) Freshman JulieJohnston poses during herfloor routine at a homegymnastics meet.
