The excitement is so great that you canbarely concentrate for the next nine hours. Why? Because American Idol is on at nine, and you absolutely haveto find out who will be the next to get eliminated. While Idol followers see their show as a smash hit, otherssit back and laugh, and see it for what it really is: an obsession.People can be disturbingly attached to anything from a Mercedes Benz and football, to oil paintingand the latest Kate Spade purse. It can be all-consuming and life-controlling. When an obsesssion ismaterialistic, the collection can seep into every part of a persons existence.[I] really liked clothes, and then became poor, so I started buying purses, said sophomore AnnaHallagan, when talking fondly of her ever growing purse collection. Music also became increasingly popular, with the arrival of I-Pods, which were seen throughout the hallways and classrooms at South. Many studentshad pictures and posters of their favorite artists decorating their lockers and folders. Senior Addison Cramereven got his own segment on the SRT show to discuss his love of music. I started liking music in 8th gradewhen my cousin introduced me to Tool, said Cramer. Many people share the same obsessions, while others are unique to only a few. Sophomore Sam Bock, known to some as origami Sam was obsessed with origami. Bock would give origami to teachers, friends, andrandom studens in the hallways.[Origami] is very time consuming...thats why I do it in school, said Bock. Some students were obsessed with famous people. Take a celebrity, add a high school girl, and youclearly have the making of an obsession. One example is Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady. How canyou not love Tom Brady? said junior Laura Forney. He is perfect. Which is why I have every t-shirt andpicture available of him.Whether it is just a fun pastime, or bordering on celebrity stalking, obsessions are part of the peoplewho make up South. Stop anyone in the hallways, start talking about The O.C. and youll see a strange lightcome into their eyes.(Right) Freshman JessicaAddazio admires hercollection oF purses.Addazio s collection rangedfrom incredibly expensive todirt cheap.(Above) Sophomore Jennifer Winston gives her Dewy postera bit of love. Winston, like other South students, becamesomewhat obsessed with the animated sitcom, The FamilyGuy.OoseeAons 33 |
