By Ouincv HarrisonLockers are an essential part of daily life at South. For some, a locker is like a canvas waitingto be filled with self-expression; for others, it is simply a daily rendezvous. Whether for sports oramusement, decorating a locker adds a variety to the otherwise uniform row of lockers. Sometimes Illcome in early to decorate a friends locker for their birthday, said junior Rachel Thomas. The pictures, ribbons and notes are often the subject of vandalism. One time we taped a bunch of candy to my friendslocker, but it didnt even stay around long enough for her to see it was there, said Thomas.Dodging through the ever-so crowded hallways, it is impossible for someone to miss a gaggle ofgiggling students flocking around the social epicenter: a locker. A lot of buses get here early, so this [afriends locker] is an easy place to meet and relax before school starts, said freshman Mallory Fischer. The hallway cholesterol caused by locker gossipers is not loved by all. It just makes it harder for me toget through and it makes me late to class, even though I do it too, said sophomore Bobby Fleming. The luxury of early morning mingling is a distant dream for the select few with the defectivelockers. These troubled lockers have problems ranging from unpredictable dials to jammed corners. Thedial jumps numbers like a river dragon, declared sophomore Daniel Siddons while explaining his lockertrouble. The people who have a flawed locker usually come up with a lucky routine to get it open. Ihave to hold the bottom left corner with my foot, give it three pounds on the top, and a lucky yodelsometimes does the trick, said Siddons.Due to the backpack ban, a regular trip to your locker is vital. Serving as a poster board, ameeting place, or a punching bag, a locker is much more than just a place to put your books.(Below) Sophomore Sharon Davis tries to open her lockerwhile carrying all of her books. Davis chose not to use herlocker throughout the day, opting to carry her book load.(Below) Sophmore Brandon Clester poses in front of hislocker which he has filled with individual cereal boxes.Clester ate the cereal as a quick breakfast before schoolstarted.18 Student Life |
