Description: voddrgraidStory by Cassie ScalesKids go to school; adults go to work, right? Wrong. Many students at South spend their extra time workingin retail or restaurants, and volunteering at non-for-profit organizations. Senior Kelli Tarr worked at leastthree or four shifts a week as a hostess at TexasRoadhouse. Tarr said, It doesnt interfere with schoolbecause they dont open until four in the afternoon, andare very flexible.Starting a job in high school was also a good way togain experience and responsibility. It pays well enoughto get me through everyday life, Tarr added. Studentskept jobs during the year for expenses like gas, cellphones, purchases like vacations or new cars, foundthat saving money proved to be quite a challenge.Junior Nichelle Allender, who worked at ClassicCatering said, Its really hard not to blow a wholepaycheck on something I dont really need.Other students chose to volunteer their time to acause without being paid for it. Sophomore Kari Fullerspent her past two summers colunteering in Pediatricsat the Bloomington Hospital. My aunt asked me aboutit one day, and she knew someone I could call, so I juststarted doing it, Fuller said, I get to meet [a lot] ofnew people and learn how to react quickly and calmlyto bad situations. Her duties included playing withkids, changing bed sheets, emptying trashcans, delivering food, and assisting the nurses with takingvital signs.Whether students needed the money or just neededsomething to do, Bloomington offered many places thathave time for them to work or volunteer. Even withschool work, extracurricular activities, and simplyhaving fun, students proved that they could pull off apart time job.
