school ofStory by Maryellen McClainWalking into the auditorium, the lights are turned lowbut they shine bright over the musicians on stage. Eachyear, South hosts Southapalooza, a concert wherestudents in bands can show their talent to the school.Opening with a freshman band and closing withexperienced junior Trey Lockerbie, there were originalworks and remakes of famous songs performed. Studentsgathered around the stage to dance and enjoy the music. This year was my first time, senior Jessica Mitchellsaid, I really liked [seniors] Zac Catozzi and BrentVlasman. Catozzi and Vlasman were a hit with studentsplaying songs like Crush by Dave Matthews Band. Thebest part [of Southapalooza] is seeing everyone get intothe music and watching fellow students put their talentto use, Mitchell said. The opening band, Asthma Attack, began the concertplaying Weezer. Although the members had only beenplaying together for a few weeks, playing in front of a bigcrowd wasnt hard for them. We practiced together onceor twice, the day before and the day of Southapalooza, freshman Nathan Dau-Schmidt said. We will possiblyplay next year.Hard work, dedication, and the interest in music by theirpeers bring back musicians and students to the Southauditorium every year.AstiimaAttackinembereNathanDau-Schmidt, Joe Bender, GregStone, and Richard Dorotheoopen Southapalooza 2004.Itwas the first thueperibrmingfor the freshmen.Senior guitarist Luke Combscatches the spotlight during arendition of Pieces byHoobastank with his band,Lefty.
