Gothic Keeps Past AliveThrough the years, the history ofBloomington High School has beenportrayed in the Gothic. Countlesshours of dedicated work combinedto produce an account of each year, hopefully covering every aspect ofschool life. The yearbook, as well as theschool, boasts a proud history. Thefirst issue, published in 1908, borethe name of Gothic as have thosethat followed. The name wasderived from the distinct style ofarchitecture used in the construction of the old Seminary Building,BHSs home at the time of the firstGothic.Several small schools and seminaries served as tributaries toBloomington High School. In 1872the high school was united with thePreparatory Department of IndianaUniversity, and located in the Central Building. Here, the first programs resembling that of a highschool began.Around 1885, the University andthe secondary school took on separate identities. But the CentralBuilding continued to house the student body of BHS which becamesmaller in number due to the competition of the Preparatory School. However, in five years, thedepartment ceased to exist, allowing Bloomington High School togrow and expand. The need soonarose for a larger building, so theSeminary Building was purchasedfrom I.U. to meet those needs. In 1899, a fire destroyed much ofthe school. In 1914, another movecame about. Located at the cornersof Walnut and Second Streets, thenew building housed a larger, accelerating student body;More than four decades passedbefore BHS again grew too large forexisting conditions, and in 1961plans began for a five million dollarcomplex. With its completion in 65,Bloomington moved to 1965 SouthWalnut, the present site. The oldschool became known as CentralJunior High, which was destroyedby fire in 1967. The present homewas re-christened BloomingtonHigh School South in 1972.With a new name, yet retainingthe same past, Bloomington Southchanced to look back, at a centurygone by.g*!^.^;iW,n |
