Expectationswere high for SOS,according to freshmanCurt Richardson. We put in a lot ofwork for the festival. We all thought that wewould take home somepretty good scores,Richardson said. The shows routinefeatured the numbersFootloose, He Livesin You, One Day More and a swing medley.Thejudges at the competition appreciated the musicalselections, as well as the groups overallperformance. The result was a first-place finish inthe show choir competition.! think we werereally comfortable with our music andchoreography and performed well because of it,senior Katie Moll said.In the classical category, the group received asecond-place finish, but was still happy with theperformance.! thought it was kind of unfair thatthere are two ways of judging choral performance, and just because one judge didnt agree with ourswe got second. But Im not disappointed in ourperformance. Its only an opinion, and if we knowwe did out best, then that should be enough, juniorJean Martin said.Besides singing and dancing, members of SOSPhoto courtesy of Lauren Humestook part in white-water rafting, riding go-carts andshopping during the trip, by Jeff CarterScience OlympiadIt all began in November when the 14-memberScience Olympiad team began the daunting task ofbuilding and preparing for their hopefuladvancement to the National competition in May.When February rolled around, they partook in theRegional and eeked out a one-point victory overBloomington North. A month later, they went on tocompete in State and proved that the close finish atRegional was a fluke, winning by 36 points overRumor of the Issueby Jordan Garner and Tarn my JarvisIn the days leading up to June I, the last day ofschool, the usual senior prank rumors startedfloating around. These included putting cows ontop of the school, greased pigs running around onthe third floor, letting loose live rodents and a Lauren Demmingwater balloon fight. Despite the rumors, many students felt that the senior class might fail tocome through with a prank. However, even before the 2:30 bell rang, some seniorsscrambled to put their pranks into action. On the night before the last day, one group filled arefrigerator with cement and put it in front of the school.Their plans were thwarted, however, when it mysteriously disappeared 10 minutes later. When school ended at 2:30, one group of students set up lawn chairs outside theteachers parking lot and drank root beer, held unlit cigars and blow-up dolls. Anothergroup, including seniors Mike Lin, Steve Sidorek, Scott McCoy, Graham McKeen and BenWidlanski loaded up a vehicle with water balloonsand water guns and took aim at students waitingoutside the school.Widlanski said,We had it ready the day before. It was fun, I think we did what we wanted to do. Buiit sucked because they (the administration) bustedus and took away our water guns.Lauren Demming:: Showplace 12 ::Just in time for the summer crowd, theShowplace 12 theatre opened on the West Side. With stadium seating and upper and lowersections, students appreciated the advanceddesign and the ability to see the screen fromany seat in the theatre. Sophomore MelissaMcClary, who lives on the west side of town, noticed the new theatres convenience andbeauty. It seems like it should be in Californiaor something. Its so big that there are hardlyany lines at all. I love that its by my house. Finally people are spreading to this side oftown, she said.Although the addition of 12 new screens inBloomington offered a wider variety in cinema,it had immediate effects on the other theatresin town. College Mall cinema switched to a two-dollar theatre, and the Von Lee cinema closedfor the summer. by Lacey Eberle214 GothicMAY/JUNE 2000 |
