mgesGoodbye to CrazySchedulesby Tammy JarvisThe school daystarts off at 8:00 a.m.with everyone going totheir first period class. At 9:00 a.m. a bell rings, letting out alltraditional students togo on to their nextclass. At 9:27 anotherbell rings to let out theblock students. To a completestranger coming intothe building, it mightseem like total chaos, but to any student itwas just another day.The students wereallowed to choosebetween three differenttype of classes:traditional, block andhybrid. I like theoptions we have now. Itallows us to choosewhat we take, sophomore PatrickMcGuire said.Although studentsliked being able tochoose their ownschedules, that freedomwould be taken awaybefore the 2000-2001school year begins. The school chose togo from three differentschedules to just one, atraditional schedule.Students were now leftwith no option but tohave a traditionalschedule, which couldcause trouble withfitting in the graduationrequirements. At first I felt Icouldnt fit stuff in, butfor the most part Ididnt have anytrouble, juniorRebecca Allerhand said.Other students haddifferent opinions ofthe new schedule Ihate it, I think its unfair.I like block and I knowa lot of other studentswho also prefer block. Ithink its not fair that(Bloomington) Northgets to keep their blockschedule but we areforced to have atraditional schedule, junior Lisa Bel lis said.iSenior Jessica Dreher Junior Peter Augenbergs Junior Bethany QuailsIts all about the bag! When the rumor that backpacks would be banned hit thehallways, its no wonder we took to arms ..._ Discordians, and I also have9 Ive got a glow-in-the-darkfrog on one zipper on my bagand a rubber chicken on theother side. Lyrics such asMy Calculus is Killing Me got the students laughing.tftStigold:: Traditional::AP CalculusIn the classroom Mr. Greg Mongold, mathematics, shows his students in both APcalculus 1-2 and 3-4 classes, his love of calculusand math in general. On Fridays he would wearpi t-shirts and sing mathematical parodies ofpopular songs.y: What teaching methods and ideas do youincorporate into your classroom?A: I try to bring a love and enthusiasm formathematics into my classroom. Its a blessingand a curse that mathematics is able to reducesome very powerful ideas to a simple formula.People who have not engaged in mathematics ata high level will not likely accept my nextstatement, but calculus is about some of themost important ideas that humans on earthhave explored. The ideas about rates ofexchange, infinity and limits that are describedin calculus are so powerful and far-reaching thatI am continually amazed. These are the ideasthat we explore. My students know what will be expected inmy classroom. Enthusiasm is my main tool. Idont believe a teacher can motivate withsarcasm. Theres no place for it in a goodclassroom relationship.I like music and parodies of other popularsongs. Ive played guitar since I was in theseventh grade, but until last year I never playedin class. My parody of Britney Spears song,Baby One More Time called dy/dx One MoreTime or My Calculus is Killing Me went over sowell this year I think Ill keep writing more.by Jessee Hahn153 |
