Lack of running water was a major concern for people. Bathtubstoppers were bought so people could fill their tubs with water to flush their toilets.Thepurchase of oil lamps and kerosene heaters was another precautionary measure takenbefore theY2K bug hit the city.To protect themselves, some people even bought guns.Many people feared flying around Jan. I, for fear of glitches in the computers of commercialairlines.My family was told that there was a possibility that our plane ride home may bedelayed. In the end, we ended up coming home right on schedule, sophomore LauraWharton said.We heard that the electricity was going to go out, and that there would not be anywater for a month. So we were prepared for theworst, freshman Jessica Walters said. Howeverthe disasters that were predicted did not happen.All of the utilities and computers worked.There was too much hype oversomething that did not happen. The Bloomington SportsPlex openedsome of its many features, offering a widediversity of sports leagues and training facilities. As of Dec. 1999, the brand new building containedfive basketball courts and an indoor soccer fieldmade of synthetic grass. Under constructionwere a state of the art track, a weight room,aerobic rooms, a golf simulator and a restaurant.Many students participate in leagues and areemployed at the SportsPlex.Its a great place. It is what Bloomingtonneeds. I really like the soccer field there ... I also jplay basketball there. The five courts they haveare awesome, and Smithville and Boys Club playthere now.
