Thats basically why I left, so Id have theopportunity to come to the college level. Itssomething thats hard to explain. As you get olderin life, youll love your job, and then all of thesudden, you see new challenges. This was a newchallenge for me.At IU I coach the tight ends, I work with theoffensive line, I work with special teams and I workwith the long snappers. I also recruit in SouthernIndiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. There is a transition between high school andcollege without a doubt. Im learning a lot, whichis the neat part of it. I had to learn a whole newsystem. Obviously, at this level the speed of thegame is much greater than at the high school level, which is what you expect. Recruiting is somethingnew too that I have spent a lot of time with becauseyou have to go find players. Technology at this levelis big. Ive had to spend time improving mycomputer skills. There is not as much of a difference betweenhigh school and college football as you would think. At this level, theyre a bit older and a little moremature. I thought one of the positives of Southwas that I always had great kids. Theyre the same atthis level, but they need more of a relationship withtheir coach because they are away from their families. One thing I miss about South is talking to thepeople I worked with and the kids I coached. Onebad thing about this job, because of the recruitingrestrictions, is that I cant go to South. I cant gowatch a baseball game or girls softball game orwhatever I want to do because its a recruitingviolation. I can only go to South one day this spring, and thats a time I will be recruiting. My most memorable moments at South are theState Championships in 1993 and 1998. For a coach, thats as good as you can do. It is a moment youllnever forget.K) Moriarty sits at his newdesk at the IU Football Stadium. He started his new posistion asassistant coach for IU at the endof the BHSS football season.D«nni5 Abramj^Pitting with students, DennisAbrams said that relating to hisstudents made the day enjoyable. My decision to leave was two fold. On one hand,I was looking for a change and a new direction. However, on the other hand, not teaching issomething that will be truly missed. In lookingdown the road I am still teaching as an assistantprincipal just in a different way. I have enjoyedmy six years at South and my departmentmembers have been great support and friends. Most memorable momentThere is no one eventhat stands out more than another. I have had greatstudents, a great room and most of all I have enjoyedworking at South. I will take many memories withme and I would not trade any of them for the world.Once the final sentence is written in thischapter, I will miss only one thing. Students arewhat makes my day so great even the bad ones. They are the reason we [teachers/staff] are here,we forget that from time to time. Students thatI had and the friendships that have developedfrom joking with each other in the halls, I willmiss. Each student that has shared their life withme is and will always be a part of my life.I will look back at my years at South as a wonderfultime, but I will not say goodbye. I will always bethere—just pick up the phone and call. The Captainwill miss his South Crew.faculty 173
