Description: personal ReflectionsBeing a part ofStudent Council hasgiven me a widevarietq ofopportunities. Justbefore Christmas, our servicechairperson told usabout ringing bellsfor the SalvationArmq. I had alwaqs seen people standing outsideTarget and inside the mall, ringing their bells anddoing their part for the communitq. I decided totake part and contribute a couple hours to ringinga bell inside the mall. While ringing, people approached me as someonewho was doing the communitq a favor. Peoplewere pleasant and willing to give, theq were full ofthe holidaq spirit. Seeing the good in so manqpeople left a lasting impression on me.sepior /typ OQ^Qorhy volunteer? With the plethora ofactivities many students are already involvedin, in addition to employment and schoolwork, community service may not seem like a priority. However, there are those who devote time and effortto helping others, and their reasons for doing so variedfrom a good feeling to a resume builder.Junior April Wood first became involved helpingout at the Bell Trace Retirement Home because oldpeople are adorable. I dont like kids much, but Ilove old people. It also felt good just to be doing it,Wood said. That good feeling volunteering produced was acommon reason students chose to become involved.Yet many found additional benefits in their service. The people Ive interacted with at MotherHubbards Cupboard [a food pantry] I wouldnt havetalked to otherwise, and theyre really neat people, senior Michael Durisen said.Whether the reason was an altruistic spirit, aspecific interest or just a desire to enhance collegeapplications, students found time in their schedulesto devote themselves to helping in the community.by Qaire Baru/isevolunteer work 19
