Description: By JesseeHahnAside from school work, students jugglethe responsibility of a part-time jobA smell of cloveand the numbingsmells of berries,herbs and flowersmomentarily stealyour sense of smell,and entice you into asmall candle kiosk.The sight of the tallblond behind thecounter trying to lookolder than her age,but trying to work ongeometry homework,arrange candles, andwork the cashregister all at oncejust make you stop towatch this youngwoman. However,sophomore KristinDemming was justtrying, like manyteens, to balanceschool and a job.You just have toponder the reasonsfor how and whysomeone would takeon a job with theresponsibilities ofschool work andextra-curricularactivities.It was a goodlearning experience.I got to learn how tomake candles, and Iarranged the candledisplays. It alsomade me better atmath skills andpercentages. Ilearned how to puttax on things andwork well withdifferent kinds ofpeople, Demmingsaid.Junior DustinGarza, who workedat Aussie Outfittersin the mall, had adifferent reasonbehind his job.I wanted money,but it was basicallyan easy way to get itwithout reallyworking hard. I justsit there for sixhours and do myhomework. So reallyI get paid to do myhomework, Garzasaid.Some studentshad complaints abouttheir jobs, rangingfrom the amountthey got paid, to theopen harassmentthey received fromfellow workers.It was difficult towork in an all maleatmosphere, beingthe only female. Itwas a greatexperience to workwith a wide range ofpeople, but there wasa lot of tension andharassment becauseI was one of the onlygirls. Between thatand school work, Ijust couldnt holddown a job, saidsophomore MarthaPayne, who workedat TalonsRestaurant at thePointe Resort.Senior DrewGrodner, who workedin the pro golf shopat the BloomingtonCountry Club, felt hewas cheated.I was underpaidand overworked, butI stayed there forthree years, thoughIm not proud of it. Istayed just because itwas an easy in andthey needed my help,and its not that easyto find another job,Grodner said.Students said thatthough they wereunhappy with theirjobs, there were somejobs they just refusedto work.I respect thepeople that work fastfood restaurants, butfor me personally Icould never work fastfood.
