Principal Dr.Mike Riggle washonored for hisexcellent dedication tothe school, hisperfect attendanceat school events andespecially for his opendoor policy for anystudent who neededto talk. Senior ClassPresident BillLaughlin presentedRiggle with adiploma, naming himan honorary memberof the graduatingclass of 1998.Today wegraduate a greatprincipal and a greatfriend, Smith said.I think that whenthey gave Dr. Rigglethe honorary diplomait was the best part ofthe wholegraduation, Kharkarsaid.Along with Riggleslast and encouragingwords to the class of98, he added just afew of their manyaccomplishments:state championshipsin Spell Bowl andScience Olympiad, aNationalchampionship girlsteam and runner-upboys team in theSolar Bike Rayce, aState runner-upfootball team, 66students who earnedthe Indiana Honorsdiploma, fourNational Meritfinalists, 38 athleteswho maintained a 3.5or higher GPA and 17students whomaintained a 4.0 GPAthrough sevensemesters.Among thetalented andaccomplished class of98 were co-valedictorians AliceHershey and DarrenKing.These two studentsadded to theoverwhelmingachievements of theclass of 1998.Hersheysaccomplishments,awards and talentsincluded: a member ofNHS, StudentCouncil, TheatreSouth and thegymnastics team, aLOTS senior and aparticipant on theSpell Bowl team.Hershey was acceptedto Brown, Harvardand SwarthmoreUniversities, anddecided to attendSwarthmore Collegeon a Coca-Colascholarship and hasnot decided her major.Among Kingsaccomplishments: amember of theStudent Council, NHSand tennis team, andhe was a LOTSsenior. King willattend CornellUniversity in the falland is undecided on amajor.Sweetness, reliefand sadness wereamong theoverwhelmingfeelings that theseseniors expressedafter becoming freefrom class, homework,lockers, teachers,crowded hallways,freshmen, bells and,most of all, six and ahalf hour school days.Muehling feltelation aftergraduating, andsenior Wendi Knappdescribed graduationas sudden freedom.Gathered in amultitude of applauseemitting from friends,parents and generalspectators, these 402seniors graduatedwith outstandinghonors andaccomplishments andeven managed tograduate a dedicatedprincipal with them.Just as when theyentered the hall, thewave of shining satinexited with the samepoise of awe andmaturity to the musicof Fanfare &Recessional.During graduationceremonies, seniors spraySilly String into the air.Commencement began at9 a.m. on June 6 and lasteda little over an hour and ahalf.Avery Thatcher28 student life• spread design by ashley davidson
