Description: Young actors, actresses spend long hoursrehearsing for Theatre South productionBright and yellow,the delicate andexpertly-craftedstage set seizes onesattention immediately. Seconds later,ones eye catches agorgeous blond thatlooks similar toMarilyn Monroesitting on a couch onthe stage. The actorsparade around forthe audience toadmire, dressed in30s-style clothingfrom vintage storesaround town, theirmakeup appliedheavily, and theirhair done up like theprincess-women ofthat era.Theatre Southpresented StageDoor, the story ofthe lives of young,starving actresses,May 7, 8 and 9 atCarmichael Hall.Everyday sinceFebruary, the castrehearsed except onFridays, and on theweek of the play,they practiced from5-10 p.m. everynight. All thesehours of rehearsaldidnt include theextra days and someweekends when theycame in to work onmakeup, hair,costumes and the set.I had to give upmy job and put allmy time and energyinto the play. Therewas no time foranything else, juniorAbigail Leonard said.Not only didmembers dedicatetheir time torehearsing, they hadto become familiarwith the characters.First, you have towatch the play amillion times. After awhile, you get toknow the charactersjust like a little kidgets to know thecharacters in astorybook. Youremotions becometheir emotions; theirexperiences, yourexperiences. You putyour wholeimagination intoyour character, makeit your own creation,and just go with it,freshman RebeccaShakespeare said.From the creativestage set, to thecharacters realisticcostumes and hair, tothe power of theactors words, almosteveryone hadsomething positive tosay about the play.I thought theplay was reallywonderful. You couldtell how much hardwork everyoneinvolved put into thisplay, and it reallypaid off, sophomoreCicely Costley said.To the actors,though, it held adifferent kind ofimportance.I really loveacting, and you donthave many optionsopen to you as astudent actor, and soTheatre South makesthis an option foryou, Leonard said.The cast agreedthe play was a way tohave a good time andenjoy a common love:acting.Everyone was soenergetic and after itwas all over, I missedit so much. It waslike I was experiencing post-play depression, freshmanErin Gupte said.It was reallyrewarding to lookback after it was overand see how great allyour hard work cametogether, seniorAdam Yost said.One is left toponder where thistalented group willbe in the future.
