Description: By SofieConnerStudents fought to stay alive in go-goboots and polyester as the 70s returnedGo-go boots, goldchains and polyesterbell-bottoms couldnot only be seen inold pictures ofparents, but also ontheir sons anddaughters as theyroamed the halls onRetro/70s Day.Retro fashionscame back into styleduring Spirit Week,which was sponsoredby Student Councilto encourage supportand participation inthe Winter Courtfestivities.Students came toschool wearingeverything fromarmy pants to theirSunday best duringSpirit Week. StudentCouncil gave giftcertificates forMcDonalds,Showplace Cinemasand Borders bookstore to variousstudents who dressedup.It was definitelythe best turnoutduring Spirit Weekever. Students mayhave dressed up forprizes, but I think alot did it just becauseits fun, seniorDarren King,Student Councilmember, said.Spirit Weekpreceded the wintercourt basketballgame on Saturday,Feb. 7. Before thegame began, seniorJeff Smithintroduced the Courtmembers to thecrowd.It was kind of anhonor to be on thecourt. I wasnt reallysure where to gowhen we walked out,so I just followed allthe other couples,freshman courtmember Ashley Huntsaid.The game, whichthe boys basketballteam defeatedBloomfield 44-41,was followed by aretro/70s dance heldin the cafeteria.I suggestedhaving the dance inthe cafeteria and noone took meseriously, but itended up being theonly place we couldhave it, King said.Due to the factthat the cafeteriawas partially underconstruction, theStudent Council hadto put forth extraeffort to make thedecorations effective.We tried to reallyhide all theunfinished stuff. Wetie-dyed sheets andhung them aroundconstruction areas.We also got a discoball and a strobelight. It ended uplooking pretty good,junior CoralineHaitjema, StudentCouncil member,said.At the dance, 650students watched asseniors Shane Moatand HollynnLambert werecrowned king andqueen.I was surprisedto win king, but itmade me happy thatmy classmates votedfor me, Moat said.All in all, thedance seemed to be agood finale to a weekcharacterized bystudents displayingtheir school spirit.The retro dancewas probably themost awesome dancebecause everyonewas really into it,and the outfits werereally groovy,sophomore MeghanHirons said.As the WinterCourt festivitiescame to a close,polyester jumpsuitsreturned to theirplace in themothballs and dustof the attic, whereparents left themyears ago.STUDENT LIFES LITTLE INSTRUCTIONSOn 70s style:Dont tease your fro too high; youmight run into stuff.-freshman Rick JessephNotable QuotablesWhere did you get your outfit for retro-day?I went to Amused and found a stretchypolyester suit.
