The History of Bloomington High SchoolA precise date for the first high schoolin Bloomington is unknown. Historiansmust refer to the first school in Bloomington, which was held in the old logCourt House sometime during 1818-1819. More log cabins were built, andclasses were held in private residences. In 1863 the first free education wasintroduced with a building being setaside for the graded high school at thelocation of the old tannery building. Thiswas where the Central School buildingwas built in 1871 and classes were heldbeginning in 1875. All grades were inthis building with the high school on thethird floor. The preparatory school of IndianaUniversity was also in the Central building and the first superintendent was anIU professor. In 1885 the IU preparatoryschool moved to another building. In 1897 the high school moved to theold college building from the CentralBuilding where the four year coursewould be started. A fire in 1899 partiallydestroyed the high school building andclasses were continued in the MethodistChurch on the corner of Third and College. By the fall the building had beenrebuilt and the name changed to theHigh School Building under the superintendent William H. Glascock.By 1909 the school had grown enoughto have departments, a yearbook, theGothic, and by 1913 a newspaper, TheOptimist. By 1914 the old college building was so crowded that a new building, known as Bloomington High School, was built to house 600 students. The oldcollege building became the junior highschool consisting of only seventh andeighth grades. The two schools were united, becoming Bloomington junior-Senior HighSchool. The old college building nowbecame the building for the sixth gradeof the entire city. During 1932 a newgymnasium, a community building, anda vocational wing was added to the highschool.
