This suddentransformation couldonly be provoked by oneevent: prom.BEFORE PROMThe Junior AdvisoryBoard worked for threeyears raising money,planning and puttingtogether the May 24prom, A Night at theOscars at theConvention Center.The Junior AdvisoryBoard and the post-prom committee, madeup of parents of juniors,began selling tickets oneweek in advance. Ticketsfor prom were $13 forjuniors, and seniorswere free. Post-promtickets were $10 inadvance and $12 at thedoor.Besides selling ticketsfor prom, the Boardworked after schoolcreating decorations.The Board worked oncreating two life-sizesculptures of Oscarstatues, along with otherdecorations including aHollywood sign, movieposters, balloonshanging from theceiling, and candlecenterpieces.While the junioradvisory board wasbusy putting thefinishing touches for theevening, girls werescheduling hair, makeupand nail appointments,while their respectivecounterparts weregetting fitted for tuxedosand picking outcorsages.Some students startedgetting ready for promas early as January. Girlsshopped for dresses andstarted their magazinehunt for the perfecthairstyle and dressaccessories.Junior Kara Hankinssaid, I got my dress thelast weekend in January,and when I got it back inMay, it didnt fit. As itturns out, a thread hadgotten stuck in thezipper and pulled it tootight. We cut the thread,and it fit perfect.Senior Erica Sebeoksaid, I had the dressand shoes, and I justdecided to wear it toprom. The dress was mygrandmothers.Dinner was anotherbig planning step afterall the dresses werealtered and the tuxeswere fit and chosen.Students traditionallywent out to dinner withtheir date and anothercouple; however, somestudents ate in their ownhomes, with cuisineprepared by theirparents.Senior Melissa Korzecsaid, My parentscooked dinner for us.They decorated the tablefor us ... and gave us alltable settings. We hadfilet mignon, twice-baked potatoes, salad,and a birthday cake forSarah Tynan. Therewere five couples.After all the pre-promhustle, everyone madethe long-awaited driveto the convention centerto actually begin theprom and dance thenight away.continuedEnjoying the festivities, studentsmove on and off the dance floor.The music was provided by RealEyes.prom 19 |
