The deci-It is safe to say everyone had Pride in thePanthers during Homecoming, especially as therush of crazed Pantherfans, sporting purpleand white clothing andbody paint, stormed intoFred Huff MemorialField Friday night.The Panther footballteam crushed theShelbyville GoldenBears, 68-6. Junior NickDunbar rushed for sixJim WitteParticipating in Spirit Week, freshman Dennis Bloom is a hippie for aday. Bloom was eating in the cafeteria, which was eventually renovatedinto a cafe style.sion caused controversyamong the seniors.The senior float hadthe theme of Cram theBears, which includeda cereal box with bearson it and a large cerealbowl. Smoke bombsexploded as seniorsMatt Austin, TomNowlin, John Patton andAndy Vargo jumped outof the cereal bowl.Basically, we just ranaround in purple shortswith our bodies paintedpurple from the waistup, Vargo said.touchdowns, tying aschool record.Junior football playerBen Pate said, It wasthe most spirit Ive everseen at a South game. Itgot us pumped up.The halftime showincluded performancesfrom the marching bandand the pom squad, aswell as the float parade.The members of theCourt were announcedat halftime. As eachmember was named,they walked with theirescorts, across the trackin front of the audience.The senior courtmembers rode in sportscars to greet the crowd.Also at halftime,senior McKenzie Maywas crowned queen byformer queen, AshleyGrossman.May said, I wasreally caught up in themoment. I was happy tobe there.The next evening wasthe traditional Homecoming dance. TheStudent Council movedthe dance, Fall IntoHomecoming, toSaturday night andchanged the informaldance to a semi-formal.The Student Councilhoped that the newdance format wouldencourage morestudents to attend.Sophomore LindsayHacker, a StudentCouncil member, said,It went a lot better thanwe (Student Council)thought it would.The auxiliary gymwas transformed into afall fantasy land. TheStudent Councildecorated it with cardboard trees covered inred, orange and yellowballoons for leaves, andhung streamers acrossthe ceiling.Senior NathanPodsakoff was namedthe king at the dance.As Podsakoff dippedand twirled the newqueen, the crowdapplauded.As the sounds of thelast slow song fadedaway, and the studentsfiled out of the hot gym,Homecoming drew to aclose, however, notwithout memories oftogas, cream pies andpainted purple bodies ineveryones mind.homecoming 13 |
