Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 1996, Page 271

Description: /Advisors AcknowledgmentsAs my days in room 215 draw to a close, my thoughts are flooded with memories of students, photographs, stories, essays, tests, and grade sheets. I cannot help but think back to my days as sports editor of my high school newspaper and photo editor (productionmanager) of my yearbook. I particularly remember Doc Watson, the teacher who introduced me to this wonderful, hectic, and rewardingfield of journalism. I have often thought that through my teaching I have in some way repaid this wonderful advisor and educator who playedsuch a key role in the person I became and my eventual career. I can only hope that I have done for some of my students what Doc didfor me.A teachers success can only be measured by the success of his or her students. My thoughts through the rest of my life will notbe far from those students who have been a part of the GOTHIC family. I have been truly blessed with some absolutely outstanding youngmen and women who have given their devotion, loyalty, creativity, and hard work to the production of a quality yearbook for BHS South. They have maintained high journalistic standards and have exhibited a passion for excellence in their endeavors. The names of student editors are too numerous to mention in these columns. Nonetheless, I want to express my thanks for theirhard work and dedication. I especially want to commend and give my heartfelt thanks to Sarah Smith and Kelli Wilson, Senior-Editors-in-Chief for my final year as GOTHIC advisor. They have both been bright rays of sunshine in my life. In addition, their brilliance as editors, leadership, and their skills as journalists have made my life easier. Every year I have said It cant possibly get any better than this! Well,it has! These two young women have done an exceptionally outstanding job. They are the best! Their attention to detail and leadershiphave been unsurpassed and I will truly miss both of them.As a matter of fact, I will collectively miss all the young men and women who have been part of the GOTHIC family over the past12 years at South.I want to thank Dr. Mike Riggle for his support and assistance throughout his years as our principal. The staff and I especiallyappreciate the freedom he has given the GOTHIC as a publication that truly represents the student body. Over the years the South facultyhas been very supportive of the yearbook and photojournalism programs. They have shared their ideas, let us know what was going on intheir classrooms, and given us the space required to cover instructional, athletic, and extra-curricular activities. I consider it an honor andprivilege to be a part of this truly outstanding high school faculty. There is one very special person I would like to single out for her skill as an administrator, knowledge, and understanding of highschool publications and her unqualified support of the GOTHIC. Phyllis Clapacs is a talented, dedicated teacher who has served South withdistinction as the Language Arts Department Chair. To her, my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for her leadership, support, and friendship.Without the stalwart backing of my wife, Georgia, I would never have survived as yearbook advisor, much less a high school teacher. She has always been here for me through thick and thin. Over the years some of my very best staff members have been recommendedby her. I will never forget the line, you had better get Sarah Smith and Kelli Wilson on your yearbook staff. They are bright, talented, anddependable young women. The GOTHIC tradition will endure. The years ahead will be challenging and I know that the GOTHIC staff will use their skill and driveto turn problems into opportunities for success. It wasnt just room 215 that made it special - it was the people! I am reminded of a passage from Lewis Carrolls The Walrus andthe Carpenter. The time has come, the Advisor said,To talk of different things,Of London -- France -- and Ancient paths,Of fantasies -- and flings -The time has come, the Walrus said,To talk of many things,Of shoes - and ships -- and sealing-wax -Of cabbages - and kings -The time has come to move ahead,To younger hands I leave these things,Fresh schemes - themes to newer teams,I say to you adieu - adieu - adieu - adieu.(Dave StaverEditors AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank all the people involved in the completion of this yearbook. SmithI would like to thank everyone one who helped out with theproduction of our yearbook this year. Although it was tedious andfrustrating at times, the end product and the friends made were wellworth it. Ill never forget the late nights spent in our little room, the notso great outlines and stories we would sometimes receive (John Doethrows a penny), and searching for team pictures and the names thatgo with them until July. Finally, thanks to Mr. Staver whose dedication has touched mylife and the lives of so many others. I close this years yearbook withthe anticipation and excitement of returning next year and carrying onthe legacy of the Gothic. yfeffi <?\£ WilsonClosing/271
