Description: Wreaking THE SURFACEOnly a junior and astate champion, what is nextfor this South swimmer? MattPendleton brought home thestate title in the 100-yardfreestyle with the time of 46.56.Pendleton also placed third inthe 200 freestyle (1:40.56), wasa member of the 200 free relaythat placed third (1:27.74) and400 free relay that placedsecond (3:11.67), which are twonew school records.Pendletons goal had been totake the title home all year. Itfeels great to be #1 throughoutthe whole state. It is what Ihave worked for all season, hesaid.Overall, the teamplaced 4th in state behind sixthstraight title winnerCarmel. Junior Ben Hunterswam to a third place finish inthe 500 freestyle with a newschool record of 4:35.42.Sophomore BrianStryker finished 11th in the 500free and swam legs on the tworelays. The season was hardtraining with a new coach, butyet, it was fun. It all paid off inthe end, stated Stryker.Helping the panthers to a fourthplace finish were senior JoshHogan, who swam on the 200free relay, and sophomore RyanTaberaux, who was a memberof the 400 free relay.The South swimteam (10-0) placed second inthe South Central Conferenceand took Sectionals. Thehighlight of the season wasdefeating Carmel, which,according to Taberaux, was anationally ranked team in 1994.Hunter said, The end of theseason is always the highlightfor most swimmers because allthe hard work pays off andeveryone swims well. But dontget me wrong - the Carmel winwas great too!Jon Alter moved upfrom assistant to head coach atSouth this year. F m extremelyexcited, Alter said.
