New and exciting industriesWith the increase of computers inthe workplace, industrial arts havelost some of their importance to highschool students. This year is the firstyear in the history of South HighSchool that there is only one industrial arts teacher for the students.Once there were as many as eleventeachers in the industrial arts department. Although industrial artshave lost the students interest, thereis still a need for the classes in everyday life according to Ron Faultless. All students should take industrial arts, it is a very good experience and background, saysFaultless, it can be used for all aspects of life.Industrial arts taught me to builda speaker box to make my stereosound better, says Jason Waterford.The main purpose of the industrialarts classes is to prepare the studentsfor Hoosier Hills Area VocationalSchool located at Bloomington HighSchool North, which they can studyat when they are juniors and seniors.Some of the courses offered here inpreparation for the Vocational Schoolare woods, general shop, drafting, andauto mechanics. Once at the Vocational School the students choose anarea of specialized training in whichto focus on for half of the day. JustinHenderson says, It is a good experience for life and other jobs.The home economics classes werefun and exciting according to thestudents. The classroom was filledwith more boys than girls, BryanMiedel says Its not just for womenanymore. The students spend oneto two days taking notes and learning the various cooking methods,then they spend one day planning therecipe, one day on a demonstrationby the teacher, Mrs. Tressler, and finally one day cooking. Each semester they have a final devised of cooking, only they are graded on howwell the food is presented, how wellthey clean up, and how well everything tastes.
