Quarterback Eli Stoddard also receivedthe Phil N. Eskew Mental AttitudeAward, the highest award that canbe given to a football player in thestate. This team had a dream thatwas turned into reality through outstanding senior leadership, team effort and superior over-all contributions by players, coaches, teachers,administrators and the fans of thiscommunity, said Coach MyronMo Moriarity. I think thisachievement shows what real teamwork can accomplish.This is really what life is all about,teamwork. It is what you put in tosomething, striving for a goal witheveryone in the group; team, parentsand everyone working together. Youarent going anywhere without thehelp of other people cooperating andworking together, Moriarity said.As varsity coach, Moriarity neverreally had any doubts about wherethis season could end. As you lookback at a 14 and 0 season, cappedwith a State Championship, you couldnever do better. In addition, two seniors received state-wide recognition:Eli Stoddard the ISHAA mental attitude award and Bo Barzilauskas wasnamed Indianas Mr. Football. Whatmore can you do? The season maybe duplicated someday, but nothingcan ever top the 1993 Panther football season, said Moriarity.South never trailed in the championship shoot out; at half-time, somePanther fans thought the outcome wasin doubt; the score was tied 27-27.A spectacular completion to TylerThompson broke the tie early in thesecond half. Leaping high into theair Thompson pulled in a Stoddard15 yard pass.The defense dominated the rest ofthe game, delivering the final victory.Safety Chris Gosney forced the LakeCentral quarterback into a pitchoutthat bounced loose. Willy Sylvesterrecovered the loose ball for Southand Stoddard ran out the clock.Stoddards game statistics wre impressive; he passed and ran for 316yards. He completed eight passes toThompson, two touchdowns, andthrew 26 for 17. Stoddard ran the ball13 times for 67 yards and a touchdown.The Panthers returned to Bloomington and 400 cheering fans and apolice escort; an honor reserved forchampions./Assistant coach Jim Self shares a hug withMatt Bethel.The football panthers line up with theirmedals to receive recognition at the pep rally.
