Carrie Schroeder smiles when sherfjs finds out Arno Holschuh and DanMikeseU arent really twins.SolutionsLook into the future, notjust tomorrow or next monthbut far into the next century.Picture the problems andchallenges that will facemankind, and attempt tocome up with practical solutions for life-threateningsituations.This is exactly what theFuture Problem Solvers didlast year. Made up of seventeams, with four people oneach team, each was giventwo preliminary problemswhich were designed to getthe thoughts rolling, saidcoach Ruth Granich, andgave members a feel for thestrict form that had to be followed during the problemsolving process.Last years problems involved space explorationand the legal epidemic (legalproblems of the future); thefinal problem dealt withsports and the use of steroids and/or performance-enhancing drugs.Solutions were sent to apanel of judges to be evaluated and scored strictly oneach given criteria, form andcontent. Good solutions require research and imagination and a lot of thought, said Granich. The end product offers very rewarding results. It gives us a good opportunity to address issues in away that most teachers restrict, said junior PeterRubin. It gave me a chanceto express my ideas whilelearning other peoples at thesame time, commentedsophomore Ann Johns.Front row: Arno Holschuh, DanMikeseU.
