Hands goup all over the room, signifying words spelled correctly. Among them waves ahand holding a purple baseball cap — another pointgained for South! The gymresounds with enthusiasticcheers.The crowd in the NorthCentral High School gymwatched this scene repeatedly at the 1989 Spell Bowlcompetition. South had thehighest score at the regionalcompetition and also won thestate competition. The teamhad a final score af 88 wordsout of 90. With this victory,South continued its string ofSpell Bowl wins. Wevebeen in Spell Bowl for fouryears, and we have four statechampionships, explainedcoach Ruth Granich.The entire team practiced every day at lunch andevery Thursday for approximately two hours afterschool, said alternate Sherry Pitman. We had to memorize about 3500 word, saidteam member MeridithJones. The two words missedat the state competition weretannic and pumpernickel. The words were divided into several categories:foreign, commonly misspelled, hyphenated, easy,scientific, and others.
