In addition,the South singers won first inthe show choir and classicaldivisions at the OprylandMusic Festival, Nashville,Tenn.According to chior direc-tor Gwenn Witten-Upchurch, this was the firsttime in the history of theOpryland competition thatthe same choral groupplaced first in two differentdivisions and was namedGrand Champion.Shortly after the beginning of the year the Madrigals began to practice for theChristmas show. Time wasspent getting ready for thetraditional concert with theother choirs from South andBatchelor. The group touredelementary schools and wentcaroling.The group undertookfundraisers during the year.They went on a home tourduring the Christmas holidays, held a rent-a-kid auction, and sold M&Ms andpizzas. These funds paid forcompetition trips.To prepare for these contests, the Sounds of Southspent every night for twomonths rehearsing. Theysang; Take a Trip, a songwritten by their choreographer Everett Bradley, ItsRaining Men, and GreasedLightning. These songs anddances, choreographed byEverett Bradley and TammyEaston, provided materialfor three crowd pleasingshows.At district competiton theyreceived a superior rating indivision one, and then wenton to place seventh in thestate competition.Commenting on the Opryland achievements, JasonHatchell said,When you receive standing ovations everytime you perform you knowyoure doing somethingright.This has been one of themost fantastic groups Iveworked with since Ive beenat South, said Witten.They have worked veryhard and have been consistently professional, and it hastruly been a pleasure working with them.196/A |
