Description:	Raising Our SpiritsTo many South students,the cheerleaders andpompettes were the peoplewho made it happen. Whenstudents walked through abrightly decorated hall atschool or drove past a players house that had been ornamented with good-luckposters, they could see thededication and enthusiasm ofthese groups. Last year, thecheerleaders and pompettesbrought home many awardsand honors.The varsity cheerleadersspent part of the 1989 summer at the NCA chreerlead-ing camp in Vincennes. Theywere nominated for thecamps excellence award,and they received a spiritstick. They also won foursuperior ribbons. LizVanderzyde, varsity co-captain, recieved nominations for Miss All-AmericanCheerleader. She traveled toNew York to participate inMacys Thanksgiving paradewith the other NCA nominees. Her co-captains wereNikki Houston and TaraThompson.Getting along was important for the cheerleaders,since they spent so muchtime together. An entireweekend was spent at BHSS,during which they cookedout, slept in the gym, andpracticed, practiced, practiced, as junior varsitycheerleader Jennifer McGlasson said.The pompettes alsoworked long hours toachieve their goals, whetherattending camps or practicing at school. The two campsthey attended last summerwere NCA and JDA, at Indiana University. They received the spirit award, andthree girls were votedsuperstars; Laura Blackerby, Sharyl Garitz, and Tracy Howard. The squadlearned about 40 new dancesand performed at halftimeduring the football and basketball games. Being a senior and a new member of thepompettes, I see how hardthe squad works, and I thinkwe have a lot to show for ourefforts this year, said AngieSciscoe.First Row: Amy Turner, JulieDeBrucker, Sarah Blackerby.
