Description: Tara Air Chapman soars abovesea level.?Winning seasonIt began as a season that wassupposed to be a rebuildingyear for Souths girls swimming team. The season became one of tremendous improvement and ended with adual meet record of eight winsand only three defeats.I am very proud of our accomplishments as a team aswell as the super improvementwhich was showed by individual team members, said GinaParrott, coach. We performed above all expectations.I really thought it would bea year of rebuilding, said Parrott. Graduating four seniorsthe year before, three ofwhom went to the state finals,the team lost a very strongcore of swimmers.Young swimmers movedup to fill those places andpulled the team through a winning season, Parrott commented.South sent only two swimmers to state. Senior KimRichey and Colombe Taaffe.Richey had gone to state allfour years of her high schoolcareer. She qualified for thecompetition in the 100 and200 freestyle events.Taaffe, a sophomore, hadgone to the state meet as afreshman and repeated herqualification in diving. She finished in eleventh place whileRichey finished 18th in the200 freestyle.The team finished second atthe sectional competition.The girls worked hard, Ifelt we had good team camaraderie and a chemistry thatworked, commentea BobBarth, assistant coach. Theyshowed a lot of improvementthroughout the year, both as ateam and individually.Colombe Taaffe flies her way to Ann Lawrence goes off into thea first place finish. deep end.SPORTS / 73
