To some people, the theme of thispast years yearbook could be explained by theexcellent programs at South, both academicand athletic. To others it could mean the qualityof Souths teachersand facilities, or thevariety of curricularchoices at the school.Several new classeswere offered this pastyear to augmentSouths regularcourses. Among thenew ones were Advanced Placement USHistory, Aerobics,Welghtlifting, and Latin 5-6, which was backfor the first time inabout fifteen years.Souths traditionalclasses (that otherschools may not offer)include the Sounds ofSouth, the schoolsshow choir, which hasparticipated in regional contests in recentyears, the newspaperand yearbook, thethird-year languages,and the AP and G/Tprograms. South alsogives students the chance to attend IU for highschool or college credit.South had a wide variety of athletic programsoffered during the 1988-89 year. Besides sportslike football, basketball, and track, South prO-^eres to you our dear old BHSlead the school song.vided the opportunity for students to participate in more unusual sports, such as water polo,hockey, and golf. Students were also encouraged to be a part of the ski club.In addition to the athletic extracurricular activities, South has several different academicgroups, including foreign language clubs, thechess club, the Business Profesionals ofAmerica (formallyOEA), and STAND(Students Toward ANew Direction).Souths many academic teams, amongthem the Decathalonand the Spellbowl,have ranked highly inboth state and national competition in thepast few years. Southalso has a branch ofthe National Honor Society, as well as an active student council.BHS South providestoo many opportunities to mention here;despite this, the ad-1ministration continuesto start new classesand programs in orderthat students mayhave a better learningatmosphere, get a jbetter education, and [have a larger chance for a decent collegeeducation.
